Frequently asked questions about ABC
What is ABA therapy, and how does it work?
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy is an evidence-based treatment for autism that uses positive reinforcement and play-based techniques to help children reduce target behaviors and learn new skills.
ABA therapy, like that administered at Action Behavior Centers, is tailored to the individual needs of the child.
When is the best time for my child to begin ABA therapy?
The earlier, the better! Clinical research has shown that children with autism who start ABA therapy early (around age 2) are more likely to reach important developmental milestones. It also increases their chances of starting school on time alongside their peers. In fact, some children progress so well with early treatment that by the time they reach school age, they are functioning at the same level as their neurotypical classmates.
These children often have some things in common: they were diagnosed and treated early.
Does ABA therapy work for autism?
Yes! Every child with autism is unique, and some children experience more significant progress with ABA therapy than others. However, studies show that children who receive two or more years of intensive behavioral interventions, such as ABA therapy, can often participate in school and social activities at the same level as their peers.
Does ABA therapy mean my child is “stuck” at a table all day repeating the same tasks?
No way! At Action Behavior Centers, we create an exciting environment for learning. While sitting at a table may be a developmental goal for school readiness, there are so many other skills to learn and fun to have.
Our centers feature designated “Eats and Crafts” spaces that are used daily for exciting activities. Circle Time, another daily event, brings therapists, BCBAs, and children together to sing, laugh, and learn. Children can also participate in energetic, therapist-led activities like group exercises and sensory rooms.
The doctor said my child's development is delayed and suggested waiting to test for autism. Is that a good idea?
It’s understandable to want to trust that your child will catch up on their own, but waiting to seek an autism diagnosis can mean missing important chances for early intervention. Early diagnosis lets your child start therapies like ABA sooner, which can improve how they communicate and interact with others. Starting therapy early, ideally between ages 2–5, gives your child the best chance to grow and reach their goals.
Do you offer other types of therapy besides ABA?
Action Behavior uses methods backed by research in behavior analysis, guided by Board Certified Behavior Analysts. We also work with experts in psychology, speech therapy, and occupational therapy.
If your child is already receiving speech or occupational services from another provider, we will collaborate with them to provide a comprehensive treatment plan.
What role do parents play in ABA therapy?
Family and caregiver involvement is key to making ABA therapy successful. At Action Behavior, biweekly Family Guidance sessions are built into every child's care. In these sessions, families meet with their child's designated BCBA to learn how to apply therapy strategies at home.
Does my child need an autism diagnosis before starting ABA therapy?
Yes. A formal autism diagnosis is required before a child can access early intervention services like ABA therapy, get insurance coverage for therapy, and qualify for certain school services. At Action Behavior, we offer the ADOS-2 and other Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations (CDEs) at no-cost to help provide diagnostic support. Contact us to learn which diagnostic tests we offer in your region.
What does compassionate care look like in an ABA setting?
Compassionate care in an ABA setting means treating each child with kindness and respect while focusing on their unique strengths and needs. It builds trust between therapists, children, and families and uses positive ways to help children learn new skills. Families are involved in the process, ensuring they feel supported and heard.
What does "assent" mean in ABA therapy?
At Action Behavior, we deliver ABA therapy through an assent framework, which means we prioritize the child’s willingness and cooperation to engage in daily activities. Assent can be given and withdawn. It’s important for us to watch each child to understand how they show assent. This helps us teach them to advocate for themselves rather than just trying to stop certain behaviors.
Do you perform background checks on your therapists and BCBAs?
Every Action Behavior teammate must pass several background checks, assessments, a multi-step interview process, and reference checks. We also ensure that every teammate stays up-to-date on the latest clinical research so your child can receive the highest quality of care. Our commitment to ongoing training helps us maintain a team of qualified professionals dedicated to supporting your family.
What is the age range of children you serve?
We serve children on the autism spectrum from 18 months to 13 years and offer personalized ABA therapy to meet their needs. Therapy program options may differ based on your region.
Ages served:
- Autism assessments: 18 months–6 years (+364 days)
- In-center ABA therapy: 18 months–8 years
- ABC at Home: 18 months–13 years
- ABC Academy: 5 years–12 years
Do you have a summer program?
Yes, our centers are open all year. During the summer months, we provide ABA therapy along with fun and creative seasonal activities your child will love!
I want to bring my child to the center, but they go to school during the day. I know they need ABA therapy, but isn’t it the law for children over 6 to be in school?
Yes, your child can still go to ABA therapy while attending school. However, the specific laws about school attendance can differ based on where you live. In many states, schools are required to allow children to miss class for ABA therapy. Regular therapy is important for your child's progress, so work with your child's school to create a schedule that works for everyone.
Does insurance cover ABA therapy?
Most health insurance plans cover ABA therapy, and we are proud to be in-network with the largest health insurers in our service areas. At ABC, our insurance specialists handle the details, so you don’t have to. We verify your child’s ABA therapy coverage, complete any necessary pre-authorization paperwork, and directly bill the insurance company for services.
How much does ABA therapy cost?
All private commercial health insurance companies in the United States and Medicaid cover ABA therapy to some degree. Health insurance can be a tricky road to navigate, which is why our staff will check your insurance eligibility for you. We will provide you with information regarding out-of-pocket costs, how many hours of ABA therapy your insurance covers, and how many hours we recommend your child needs.
Patient responsibility refers to the total amount a patient must pay out of their own pocket. This may include copayments or coinsurance for insured patients. Families who are paying for ABA therapy often find insurance covers most or sometimes all of the expense, particularly once the family has met their deductible or maximum out-of-pocket amount for the year.
Can I just make a copay for ABA therapy like I do at the doctor’s office?
If you have a copay or coinsurance, you can pay online through our easy-to-use patient portal. During the admissions process, we will provide you with a fee schedule and an estimate of your anticipated out-of-pocket expenses for ABA therapy.
Do you offer financial assistance for ABA therapy?
Yes! We never want cost to be a factor in preventing a child from receiving ABA therapy. We offer sliding-scale payment options for those who qualify.
What is the ADOS-2 assessment?
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a leading diagnostic tool clinicians use to evaluate for possible ASD. During this natural, play-based assessment, our experts work with children to observe their communication, social skills, and behaviors.
How can I know if my child needs an autism evaluation?
Early signs of autism can include limited eye contact, lack of response to name, repetitive behaviors, and delayed speech. Screening tools like the M-CHAT-R and the CAST can help identify your child’s autism risk based on these specific signs. If these tools indicate that your child may have autism, additional assessments like the ADOS-2 can provide a more thorough evaluation.
What should I do if my child is diagnosed with autism?
If your child is diagnosed with autism, it's important to remember that you are not alone, and there are many resources available to support your family. Start by connecting with your child's pediatrician to discuss the diagnosis and develop a plan. Early intervention services, including ABA therapy, have been proven to help children develop essential life skills.
How does ABA therapy help children with autism?
ABA therapy uses positive reinforcement and play-based activities to help children reach milestones and learn new skills. Our programming is tailored to each child’s needs and is designed to produce results you can feel good about.
Our BCBAs work with each family to determine goals for ABA therapy. Some children need help learning new skills, like talking and increasing eye contact. Other children may need support decreasing self-injurious or other target behaviors. Whatever your goals are, we are here to support you and help your child have a happy and fulfilling childhood.
Can I get an autism diagnosis for my child without visiting a doctor?
Consulting with your primary care provider is a crucial step to ensure that you get a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis for your child. While initial screenings, such as the M-CHAT-R or CAST, can be a helpful first step and can be done online, a formal diagnosis requires a more thorough assessment. For this, tools like the ADOS-2, administered by a qualified professional, are necessary.
After the ADOS-2 assessment, Action Behavior Centers will send the results directly to your child's referring doctor. Your child's doctor will then review these results to evaluate whether the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder is met or if additional testing may be needed.
Will my insurance cover the cost of ABA therapy?
Each insurance plan differs in terms of how many hours of ABA therapy are covered after a thorough assessment of the child’s needs. Our team of insurance specialists is happy to navigate the insurance verification process on your behalf and provide you with specific information about your plan’s benefits.
Who provides ABA therapy?
ABA therapy at Action Behavior is provided by trained professionals, including Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs). The care your child receives is driven by research and supervised by a clinical council of experts.
What is applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy?
ABA therapy is a gold standard approach for helping children with autism learn and meet milestones. This evidence-based therapy method helps children reduce target behaviors through play, positive reinforcement, and other ABA techniques.
What is the CAST?
The Childhood Autism Spectrum Test (CAST) is a 39-item questionnaire for parents that focuses on behaviors and abilities that can indicate ASD. It can help identify children who may benefit from further evaluation and intervention.
What is the M-CHAT-R?
The Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised (M-CHAT-R) is a screening tool that parents can use to identify early signs of ASD in children ages 16 to 30 months old. It consists of questions parents answer about their child’s development. If a child receives a high-risk score, they should receive further evaluation by an autism specialist.
How do I get started with Action Behavior Centers?

We can also schedule an ADOS-2 or other Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation (CDE), if necessary. After completing intake paperwork, you and your child will meet their Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) to set therapy goals.
How frequent are ABA therapy sessions, and how long do the sessions last?
ABA therapy usually happens 20 to 40 hours a week for several hours each session. How long a child participates in therapy depends on their unique needs, but it can go on for several months or years. The therapy plan is adjusted as the child makes progress to help them reach their goals.
