Online CAST autism screening tool
While autism is typically diagnosed in early childhood, some children on the spectrum may not receive a diagnosis until much later.
The CAST is a valuable tool for recognizing these cases and ensuring children get the help they need. If your child is younger than 4, please complete the M-CHAT-R screening tool instead of the CAST.

How the CAST works
Who completes the CAST?
A parent, caregiver, or teacher who is familiar with the child’s day-to-day behavior should complete the CAST.
How long does the CAST take?
It takes about 5–10 minutes to complete all 37 questions.
What does the CAST ask about?
The CAST covers topics such as:
- Social engagement (e.g., playing with other children)
- Verbal and nonverbal communication
- Imaginative play
- Repetitive behaviors or narrow interests

CAST scoring
The CAST consists of 37 yes-or-no questions designed to identify behaviors and communication patterns that are commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder. Once completed, each response is scored based on whether it aligns with characteristics typically seen in children on the autism spectrum.
CAST scoring method
Each response receives a score of 0 or 1, depending on whether it reflects a potential sign or trait of autism. The total score can range from 0 to 31. Only 31 of the 37 questions are scored; the remaining 6 are control questions.
Score range
Interpretation
Recommended action
0-14
Low likelihood of autism traits
No further action needed unless other concerns exist
15-30
Possible autism traits
Follow up with a professional autism evaluation
+31
High likelihood of autism
Immediate clinical assessment is recommended
It’s important to note that the CAST is just a screening tool, not a test that gives a diagnosis. A high score doesn’t mean your child has autism. It just means they may need a closer look with a more detailed evaluation, like the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2.)
What to expect after the CAST
Once you complete the Childhood Autism Spectrum Test, the team at Action Behavior Centers is here to guide you every step of the way.
1. Review of your child’s CAST results
Within one business day, a Clinic Admissions Associate (CAA) will contact you to review your child’s results and discuss any concerns you may have.
2. Comprehensive evaluation
If your child’s CAST score suggests signs of autism, we may recommend a follow-up evaluation using the ADOS-2. The ADOS-2 is a gold-standard, face-to-face autism assessment conducted by highly trained clinicians in our centers.
After the assessment, our team will score the results and share them with your child’s doctor. The doctor will use this information, along with their own clinical judgment, to decide whether a diagnosis is appropriate.
3. Personalized autism care plan
If your child is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, we’ll walk you through the next steps, including:
- Insurance verification and benefits check
- A meeting with a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
- Creation of individualized ABA therapy goals tailored to your child’s needs
Our ABA programs are designed to help children strengthen communication, daily living, and social skills in a caring, supportive environment.

Please answer the following questions about your child, considering how they usually behave. It's important that the person who completes the CAST has seen how the child behaves in different settings and situations. If you have seen your child engage in a behavior a few times, but they do not usually do it, then please answer no. Please check yes or no for every question.
